Who the DTV is for
The consulate lists three categories. Knowing which one you're in decides which documents you need, because the lists differ.
| Category | Who it covers | Extra proof |
|---|---|---|
| Workcation | Digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers, foreign talent | Employment contract, employer letter, or a portfolio showing your work |
| Thai soft power | Muay Thai, Thai culinary training, medical treatment | Acceptance letter from the institution, or appointment letter from the hospital |
| Dependants | Spouse and children under 20 of a DTV holder | Proof of relationship: birth or marriage certificate |
The money requirement
This is the part that disqualifies most people, and it's worth being precise about it because summaries online get it wrong.
The requirement is a copy of the last three months of savings or checking bank statements, showing an ending balance of no less than 500,000 THB, with your name and the date visible. Not a single snapshot. Three months of history.
Three consequences follow from that wording, and each one catches someone out:
- Parking the money the week before you apply is visible. The statements show the trajectory, not just the final number.
- It has to be your name on the statement. If you're submitting a family statement, you must also provide proof of the relationship, such as a marriage or birth certificate.
- The account type matters less than the statement quality. Screenshots and unclear scans are explicitly called out as grounds for a request for more documents, which delays the application.
At the exchange rates I've seen recently, 500,000 baht is a meaningful but not enormous sum. The harder problem for most applicants is holding it still for three months rather than producing it at all.
The full document list
For the workcation route, the consulate lists seven items. This is the list as published, not a summary:
- Passport biodata page, valid for at least six months from the travel date
- A photograph taken within the past six months
- Document indicating your current location, such as a driving licence, bank statement or proof of stay
- Three months of bank statements showing an ending balance of at least 500,000 THB
- An employment contract or certificate from your country, or a professional portfolio demonstrating remote work or freelance status
- Proof of permanent residence, such as a valid driving licence, visa or permanent resident card
- A police criminal certificate issued within three months
Two of those are more work than they look. The police certificate means a background check from your own country, which in some jurisdictions takes weeks and requires an address you can still receive post at. Start it before anything else, because it's the item most likely to set your timeline.
The proof of residence requirement is awkward if you're already travelling and don't have a fixed address. A bank statement in your name with an address usually satisfies it.
How to apply
Applications go through Thailand's e-Visa system rather than a paper form at an embassy. You apply online, upload the documents, pay, and then wait. Processing time varies by consulate and by how clean your documents are.
Apply in a country where you're legally resident, not simply where you happen to be holidaying. The consulate asks for proof of residence and it means it. This is one of the most common reasons applications get bounced: people apply from a country they're visiting rather than one they live in.
What the DTV does not give you
It's as important to know what a visa doesn't do.
- It is not permission to work for a Thai employer. The DTV covers earnings from outside Thailand. Taking a local job requires a Non-Immigrant B and a work permit.
- It is not permanent residence, and time on a DTV doesn't build toward it the way some other routes do.
- It doesn't remove the 90-day reporting obligation if you stay continuously. That's a separate requirement that applies regardless of visa type.
- It isn't a tax opinion. Whether you become tax resident in Thailand depends on days present and on treaty rules, and the visa doesn't settle that question. Take proper advice if your income is significant.
Where applications stumble
These aren't official rejection reasons, they're the failure points that follow from the document requirements themselves:
- The three-month balance. Money that arrived last week doesn't satisfy "ending balance" across three statements in the way people assume.
- Name mismatch. Married names, transliteration differences and joint accounts all create work. If the name on your bank statement doesn't match your passport exactly, expect questions.
- Applying from the wrong country. Residence proof is a real requirement, not a formality.
- Unclear scans. The consulate states plainly that screenshots or unclear files trigger requests for more documents.
- The police certificate window. It must be issued within three months. Order it too early and it expires; too late and it delays everything else.
What I could not verify
Two figures that appear everywhere online, and which I am not stating as fact here:
- Validity period and permitted stay per entry. The consulate page I read confirms the financial requirement and the document list but does not state the visa's duration. Commonly cited figures should be checked against the e-Visa page before you plan around them.
- The government fee. Consular fees differ by location and are revised. Check the fee shown in the e-Visa system at the point of application rather than a figure from a blog.
I'd rather tell you the page has a gap than fill it with a number I haven't confirmed.
