Privacy policy

What this site collects, why it collects it, how long it keeps it, and what you can ask me to do about it.

Who is responsible

Nomad Budget Guide is a personal site written by Sazan, an Australian living in Bangkok. The site is operated from Thailand and published at nomadbudgetguide.com. For any privacy question, contact sazan@nomadbudgetguide.com.

What this site collects

The site is static. There is no login, no account, and no database of readers. Three things are collected, and only two of them involve you personally.

1. Analytics data

The site uses Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are read and which are not. This collects a randomised identifier, approximate location derived from your IP address, the pages you visit, how long you spend, the device and browser you use, and how you arrived — for example, a search engine or a link from another site.

It does not collect your name, your email address, or your exact address. The site does not use Google Analytics advertising features, does not enable remarketing, and does not build advertising profiles.

2. Server logs

The site is hosted on Hostinger. Like every web host, their servers record requests, including IP addresses, timestamps and the pages requested. These logs exist for security and troubleshooting and are retained according to Hostinger's own policy, which is outside my direct control.

3. Emails you send

If you email a correction or a question, I receive your email address and whatever you choose to write. That's kept for as long as it's useful for the correspondence, and if a correction results in a published change, the substance of it is noted on the page itself — with your name only if you say that's fine.

Cookies

Google Analytics sets cookies to distinguish one visitor session from another. The site itself sets no cookies of its own and runs no advertising or tracking pixels from other networks.

You can refuse analytics cookies without losing access to anything. The site works fully without them. Browser settings and extensions that block analytics are respected.

Why this is lawful

Under the GDPR and UK GDPR, the legal basis for analytics is legitimate interest: understanding which pages are useful so I can write better ones, with the data minimised and no advertising profile built from it. The legal basis for handling emails you send is legitimate interest in responding to you, or your consent where a correction is published with your name.

Who else sees it

Two processors, both necessary to run the site:

  • Google Analytics, for traffic measurement. Google may process this data outside the UK and EU under its own safeguards.
  • Hostinger, for hosting and server logs.

Nothing is sold, rented, or shared with advertisers. There is no data broker relationship here, and there never will be.

How long it is kept

Analytics data is retained for 14 months, which is Google's standard retention period for this configuration. Server logs are retained by the host on their schedule. Emails are kept until the correspondence is resolved, and longer only if they document a published correction.

Your rights

If you are in the UK, the EU, or a jurisdiction with similar law, you can ask to:

  • see what personal data is held about you
  • have it corrected if it's wrong
  • have it deleted
  • restrict or object to how it's used
  • receive a copy in a portable format
  • withdraw consent where consent is the basis

Email sazan@nomadbudgetguide.com and I'll respond within 30 days. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority — in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office; in Australia, the OAIC.

In practice, the fastest way to stop analytics collection is to use a tracker blocker. The site doesn't hold enough data about any individual for a deletion request to be meaningful, but if you want one, ask and I'll act on it.

Affiliate links

Some links on this site are affiliate links. The main one is Trip.com, which is where we book our own accommodation, flights, activities and eSIMs. If you book through one of those links, the site earns a small commission. You pay exactly the same price as you would without it — the commission comes out of the platform's margin, not your total.

Affiliate links are labelled where they appear, next to the link rather than buried in a footer, and they carry a sponsored attribute so search engines can identify them as commercial. That labelling is not optional and it is not decorative.

The commission does not determine what gets recommended. On the Khao San Road page the cheapest properties are listed first because they are cheapest, and the article's advice — that a four-star hotel there costs less than a hostel bed in many cities — would read the same whether or not a link existed. If you ever see a recommendation that looks written for the commission rather than the traveller, tell me and I'll change it.

What this means for your data

Clicking an affiliate link takes you to Trip.com, which sets its own cookies and has its own privacy policy. From that point your data is governed by their terms, not this site's. This site passes along a referral identifier; it does not receive your name, booking details or payment information.

Children

This site is written for adults planning travel and relocation. It is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16.

Third-party links

Pages link to official sources — Thai government sites, embassies, transport operators. Once you leave this site, their privacy policies apply, not mine.

Changes to this policy

If what the site collects changes — a newsletter, affiliate links, a contact form — this page changes at the same time, and the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will be noted on the affected page rather than made silently.
